Virtual Cookie Exchange

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Welcome to the first, annual (I hope!) virtual cookie exchange hosted by Another Suburban Mom (affectionately known as ASM). And yes, I can say affectionately as I've shared a shower with her! No, not at the same time, but that's just a technicality!

Let me start by saying I have a new appreciation for food bloggers. It's nothing for me to string a few paragraphs of nonsense together, but putting together this post took time, and lots of it! Of course, I could have just followed ASM's directions and posted a short story and the recipe, but you know me, always a show-off an overachiever!

This is the short, sweet story behind my recipe. When Cam and I moved to Minnesota due to a corporate buy-out (Cam was 18 months old), I felt very isolated. Not only did I not know a single person there, but I didn't even know where the nearest grocery store was. Fortunately, I found a single moms email list (yes, that same email list that has since been my Achilles heal in regards to this blog) and met S and her daughter M. They became a lifeline, and dear friends, to Cam and I. S introduced us to this recipe about 10 years ago, and it quickly became a favorite of Cam's. In fact, I'm pretty sure he ate his weight in the damn things the first time he tried them. They became known as:

Cam's Chocolate Chip Balls

Ingredients:

1 cup butter
1 cup butter flavor Crisco
1 cup brown sugar (packed)

2 egg yolks (save the whites)
2 tsp vanilla
5 cups flour
1 tsp. baking soda
12 oz. bag mini chocolate chips

Chocolate sprinkles (or mouse turds as they are known in our house)

Oops! Forgot to put the vanilla and the baking soda in the ingredients picture!

Cream together butter, Crisco and brown sugar.

Add the egg yolks, vanilla and baking soda.

Mix in the flour and mini chocolate chips.

Eat some of the raw cookie dough (get over your aversion to salmonella - live dangerously). In between eating bits of the dough, roll some of the remaining dough into 1" balls. Beat the egg whites with a fork. Dip the balls into the beaten egg white and then into the chocolate sprinkles.

Place about 1" apart on a non-stick cookie sheet. Bake at 350 degrees F for 8-10 minutes.

Cool on a wire rack.

I can't imagine you'll have any extras, but if you do, these freeze very well!

Those just look ridiculously good. Lucky for me, I just ran out of the necessary ingredients. And I lost my keys, so I can't drive to the store to get them. And my neighbor can't drive me because he lost his keys too. And my phone is broken, so I can't call anyone to take me there. And the store is not really only 3/4 mile away so I won't walk there. I'll just keep telling myself these things until the temptation subsides. I mean, really, I don't need to be eating anything that obviously fattening anyway, right?
Right?

Off to the store.

I hope the cookie exchange becomes a yearly thing too! I had fun putting my post together. :) Even though it was a bit of work getting the recipes and directions from folks and double checking to make sure I had it all right.

Those look so good! I cook like nobody's business but baking, I'm just not so hot at. Luckily, my boyfriend can bake quite well! I'll have to show him this and ask him if he'll please give making these a try. Yum yum.

Those are going into the recipe files. I might have to make a batch of those for Christmas Day!

Do you think they would be as tasty if I used red and green sprinkles?

captain corky said...

They look really good and there's no way that I would have any left to freeze.

Hubman said...

OK, I'm sitting here laughing first at the shower reference, then at "mouse turds"

And the cookies look yummy!

I am glad the word 'chip' is in there to 'break up' the title a little bit..reminds me of south park and the 'chocolate salty balls' .....'balls' it seems like I cant stop saying it....

Richard said...

They look yummy.Do you ahve a receipe for cheese cake?.

Holiday traditions really are special. We carry them all through our lives and discover them anew with friends we make.

Those look great Dana.

They're going to make it to my recipe list, I can tell you!

FMD, you know, if you walked to the store and back it should cancel out all of the calories in at least teo of the cookies!

Amorous, I love to bake, but then I do have a bit of a chemistry geek component built in and baking is all about the chemistry!

ASM, I think they would look like Christmas cookies instead of mouse-turd balls! *wink*

Dana said...

Corky, I have to freeze them sometimes just to keep Cam's consumption at a somewhat acceptable level!

Hubman, tell me with a straight face that chocolate sprinkles do not look like mouse turds!

DB, I'd give you a bad time about this, but as I was writing the post I had a moment where I had to decide if it was OK to use Cam and balls in the same sentence!

Dana said...

Richard, let me dig into my files. I have an excellent cheesecake recipe.

Fabsterrant, Cam and I seem to be lacking a bit in holiday traditions, but this is one he won't ever let me forget!

Jormengrund, they really are yummy, and easy to make too!

When Chicklet gets over the stomach thing that has lead us to ban all things milk related (including chocolate), we'll have to try those.

Wow Dana. Those look REALLY good. I'm going shopping, because my 5 year old LOVES to cook and put stuff together. This should keep her out of trouble for a 10 - 15 minutes.

I can't believe that I'm the only one to be so juvenile as to laugh at "S" & "M"...

TOTALLY making those. My daughter loves to cook, and for an 8 year old, she's damn good at it. She'll have a blast. Thank you! :)

M said...

Ooooh, step by step pictures. How Pioneer Womanlike :)

Those look like something my kids would love!

Omg these look delicious! I'm stealing!

I had to remove cam from my mind while I addressed it as well - I still get uptight when I talk to my richard friends who go by dick.....

on a recipe note they look great....but no matter what I want to say I keep feeling the urge to bust out my high school humor....

Knight said...

I don't think I would make it to the baking part. I would get sick from eating all the dough.

Jay said...

You have some yummy looking cookies Dana! ;-)

Jennybean said...

oh those look too good....

*off to the store to pick up some mini chips...

Yum those look good and Emma agrees! She said, "hey, Momma, we could make those cookies!" LOL

Vinny "Bond" Marini said...

I can't bake...measurements and I do NOT get along...

But...let me say I can eat some of your cookies

Jeff B said...

OK, I'll admit it. My inner twelve year old laughed at the name of these cookies.

Going to have to give these a go this weekend.

The problem I have with this idea is that it may be a "virtual cookie exchange" but the sudden rumbling in my stomach is anything but virtual!

They look delightful - good enough to eat! ;)

Dana, you have a delightful cookie recipe. I hope to try it soon. Yum!!

Vixen said...

Of course it took you a ridiculously long time to write this post.... Bc it's like the best recipe post I've ever seen! LOLOL I would SO totally buy a cookbook from you.

Cookies sound yummy btw. :)

Schmoop said...

What's not to like about balls, chocolatey or otherwise? Cheer sDana!!

Dana said...

Buff, I think it more like baking with a keen attention to detail!

RLL, the plate is empty now, but I'll be making another batch soon!

AOG, they really are good, and easy to put together!

Dana said...

Anndi, no chocolate? Now I really feel sorry for Chicklet!

Bina, she'll have fun with these. They are an easy cookie for small hands to make.

Biscuit, I wondered who would be the first to get the 12-year old humor bug. DoggyBloggy got it with the balls - you got it with the S & M. Honestly, as I was writing this up I got the giggles and felt oh-so-wrong referencing Cam's balls and S&M in the same post. Of course I could have changed S & M's initials, but my anal retentive/OCD tendencies just wouldn't allow it.

Dana said...

M, don't tell anyone but I have Pioneer Woman envy!

Rage, please do steal!

DB, I'm stuck there too. I think everyone else was just nice enough to not bring it up!

Dana said...

Knight, I have no idea how many balls this recipe makes because I've never been able to actually bake it all!

Jay, would you like a bite of my cookie??

JennyBean, they are - enjoy!

Dana said...

FF, Emma could most certainly help you out with these too!

Bond, are you trying to tell me that when I come to visit I need to bring my cookies?

Jeff, well, you may rename them Jeff's CC Balls!

Dana said...

Ro, wouldn't it be nice to reach in through the screen and try one?!

Doomed, I think you should try it!

Vixen, you know me, I was concerned about doing a good job and got a bit carried away with the whole process.

Dana said...

Matt-Man, why do these lyrics keep going through my head ...

Some balls are held for charity
And some for fancy dress
But when they're held for pleasure,
They're the balls that I like best.
And my balls are always bouncing,
To the left and to the right.
It's my belief that my big balls should be held every night.

Karen said...

Oh, Dana. They look wonderful. So wonderful that I tried to make them this morning. Tried being the key word. I don't have your magic touch. My dough was too dry and fell apart and I ended up with a mess. I will have to stick to the cookies I know. No being creative for me.
