There is no question regarding my distaste of our President's current and proposed political agenda, but one of the things that drives me absolutely nuts about him is his jellyfish-ness. Jellyfish-ness? Yep! No backbone, real squishy and squirmy, yet simply beautiful to watch. Obama spends more time trying to get everyone to like him than he does running the country. His speeches - brilliantly written and orated - never have much substance, but evoke emotions from the masses. It's like attending a Brian Tracy motivational conference - everyone returns to work excited and ready for change, 37 hours and 22 minutes later, they're sitting at their desk, trying to figure out how to surf porn without getting caught again.
I was thrilled - no, make that ecstatic - when at Wednesday night's press conference, after being asked about the Gates incident, Obama scolded the local police for "acting stupidly for arresting somebody when there was already proof that they were in their own home." Whew! He is capable of speaking spontaneously and having an opinion that isn't "bipartisan!" How wonderfully refreshing!
Do I agree with Obama's opinion? No - the more I learn the more I side with police. There will be some of you who want to interject race and racism into this, but you'd be wrong. This is about someone who is highly successful, attempting to justify his unreasonable reactions (sense of entitlement anyone?) and having that handy race card up his sleeve. We'd all be cheering if this happened to a privileged white woman ... say Paris Hilton. In fact, I'd be willing to bet that most would say the spoiled brat deserved it - but let it happen to a privileged black man and it's suddenly racism.
Anyway ... I'm rambling ... back to the point ...
I found it quite admirable that Obamagrew a pair found the intestinal fortitude to say something controversial - to let words from his heart escape from his lips. I was actually starting to like respect him. I may not agree with his opinion, but hell yes! Speak your heart. Give me something of substance to chew on. Give me a President who cares less about his popularity and more about what is happening in this country. This isn't high school - we didn't elect a homecoming king - we elected a President.
Then it happened. Yeah ... yeah ... I can hear all of youcommunist bastards Obama supporters chiming in with ,"It takes a big man to admit when he was wrong." Pffftttt! It was nothing more than damage control. Right back to the wishy-washy, let's make everyone happy, bullshit. I was basking in the joy of hearing Obama, for the FIRST time, speak from his heart, and now he's doing the moonwalk right back to Wonderland.
Simmer down now, simmer down ...

When did Obama admit that he was wrong? I don't think he has backed off what he thinks in the Gates incident only that he should have phrased it differently. There has been no apology, and I dig that.
Sure he is going to do damage control and put nuances on his messages based on poll numbers like any politician would, but I don't see him as wishy-washy.
I see him more, regardless of any success or failure, as a guy that knows what he wants and is at the same timne open minded and pragamtic.
I think that's pretty amazing for a Kenyan-Born islamic terrorist. Cheers!!
Matt-Man, not wrong in his opinion of the situation, but wrong in his choice of words, which I find even more disturbing as it leads me to believe he is more concerned with "disguising" his opinions - making them palatable to the majority so he doesn't lose their support.
I would say he is like every other politician - open minded and pragmatic to "his" agenda.
I don't find a person wishing he or she had chosen words differently to be a bad thing nor do I find it to be necesarily self-serving. There are many times I wish I had chosen different words in order to make a point.
As for your "pragmatic to his agenda" comment I disagree. Secys Gates and Panetta, Gen. Petraeus, and others are pretty much given free reign to do what they see fit. Cheers!!
Blah blah blah ;-)
Polling numbers, Dana! And follow the money too.
Why would you side with the police? The man is in his own home. Yes, the police were doing their job by responding to a call of a possible breaking-and-entering. But once it is established that it's Dr. Gates' home, what the fuck is the cop still doing there? Even if Dr. Gates took an attitude with the cop, IT'S HIS HOME!!!!
On the point of your post, you expect any different from a politician? They're all worthless sacks of shit, every last one of them...
they all are wishy washy as hell.
The one that wasn't scared to stick to his guns just got decimated by the press and the people he protected.
I can't stand to watch him walk though! They spent a lot of money sending him to preacher school to learn cadence while reading a prompter, it sure looks like thay could have taken one afternoon and taught him to not walk like George Jefferson.
He never said he was wrong, he admitted that he could have chosen better words and that he drew more attention to the situation, but that in no way was an apology or admission of wrong doing. I don't agree that he has no backbone and spends time trying to get everyone to like him. His ratings already confirm that the majority still like him and his actions confirm the presence of his backbone. I absolutely do not side with the side of the police, I am certain that I would have raised my voice in that situation too. If I am not mistaken, the charges against Gates have been dropped because according the the laws of Massachusetts Mr Gates did not commit disorderly conduct afterall. I don't know if race had anything to do with it or not and I get a little weary of the race card always being tossed in, but then I am not black or brown or purple or red so I really do not know what it is like to experience that and as the saying goes, until I have walked in those shoes...funny though, now I am not just merely a troll but qualify also as a "communist bastard" huh?
Matt-Man, I was just happy to see him have an opinion - and to actually state it - on something and we can speculate on whether this was self-serving until the cows come home. He is the only one who knows that.
Jay, I'm starting to hear that same thing each time I turn on the TV *wink*
we're doomed, which is why it's CRACKING me up that supporters are "defending" him - saying that played no part. Hello? He *is* still a politician.
Obama's a douche for getting involved in this situation in the first place. Especially when he didn't know all of the facts. I didn't vote for the guy and I still like him less each time he opens up his mouth.
Hubman, if you read the report, the issue was that he REFUSED to establish it was his home - REFUSED to come out of the home. Sure, you have that right, but there is a consequence for that action. I believe Dr. Gates wanted to do what he wanted to do and expected the police to cater to him because of who he is. When they didn't - he screamed racism. It's reactions like that that are harming race relations in this country.
Southern Sage, agreed - it's part of the political process - but damn! I thought I caught a glimmer of hope.
snugs the next time I don't feel like admitting I'm wrong, I'll just claim I could have chosen my words better. His rating are quickly slipping (approval rate on handling health care now below 50%), although I have no doubt that is directly related to those evil, lying conservatives.
Oh, and snugs? I know this is hard to believe, but thoughts of you never entered my head as I was writing this post. Paranoid much?
It was irresponsible for him to say that. I understand the concept of "growing a pair," but it would be nice if he'd not be an asshole when he decides to do it.
not paranoid at all Dana, being an Obama supporter makes me in your words a communist bastard..
rage, funny you mention that - I thought the same thing - although I have to place some of the blame for that one on the press corps who seems to always be looking for a sound bite.
Karen, now that comment just made me laugh.
snugs Damn! I could have sworn the words "Communist bastards" had a strike through them. It was meant to be a parody of the FAR right mongrels who claim he is taking this country into a communist form of government, nothing more.
Love this post Dana! And love your response to hubman even more. Bravo.
i too read the report of the incident, seems simple to me, if a cop says to you, "let me see your i.d." or "pull over" you comply.. they asked they guy several times for his i.d. & he refused. how do they know who he is, they got a call about someone attempting to break in to a home. responded to the call, found someone in the home, who had a bit of attitude & said, "its my house".. weeeelllll the next obvious thing for the cop to do was to say, "ok, show me your i.d. with this address on it..." seems simple enough to me... as far as obama goes, to call the actions of the cops stupid, well he's quite an inexperienced statesman.. but then thats fine by me, im all for a citizen government... they're all dumbasses anyway.. whether they speak eloquently or say "nucular"
