Friday Wrap-Up

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Have you seen all the hubbub about this New York Post editorial cartoon?

Seems my favorite pain in the ass civil rights activist, Al Sharpton, has decided that, at least for the next 4 years, no one shall mention anything remotely associated with President Obama, and any member of the Pan Troglodyte family within the same breath without being deemed a racist. Of course, this cartoon has nothing to do with the two most publicized news events of last week (the stimulus plan and Travis the chimp), but rather is likening President Obama to a monkey. Why have the rules changed? I think that's called hypocrisy! *rolls eyes*

Jay left a comment on my TMI Tuesday post regarding the high administrative fees associated with the United Way, and I felt it was important to point out that the United Way has extremely low administrative fees (less that 7.5% of their budget – a SUPERIOR rating according to Charity Navigator). If you are ever curious as to how your donation is spent by any charitable organization, this is a great resource!

Saturday, Cam will be helping out at the “Primetimers” (those in their 60's and beyond) event at the church. The Primetimers are having a Wii bowling tournament and apparently they needed some middle school students to help teach them how to use the Wii gaming system. Cam (and a friend) volunteered, so they’ll spend their afternoon hanging out with the sexagenarians. He makes me so damn proud at times - then he does something completely stupid and I wonder how the same child can be so sweet one moment and so clueless the next. Oh … yeah … we call those teenagers, don’t we?

I just love Chicago - so many idiots to blog about! The city has installed red light cameras that click a photo of cars running red lights, then generates a ticket (Big Brother anyone?). As if that's not enough, one of the City Alderman has introduced an ordinance that would require countdown signals at intersections with cameras, similar to those on walk lights which tell pedestrians how much time they have to cross a street. Um ... hello? Isn't that what the YELLOW LIGHT is?? A warning that the signal will soon turn red? Goodness ...

There is the state of Illinois and the state of Chicago. Guess which state runs Illinois? Most of Illinois's bad laws and bad politics comes fron the state of Chaos/Chicago. Most of the money to run the state of Illinois comes from the state of Chaos/Chicago, so I guess you have to take the bad with the good in Illinois. Dana, you are right about the United Way. Most of the time they do a great job with our money. They also keep a close eye on the members of the United way who receive our donated money.
God bless Cam on his work to help people.

How is enforcing the law, in a way that is fiscally responsible (ie it costs less in the long run than having a cop there), big brother-ish?

Still, that Alderman? Idiot....

Have a good weekend!

Sharpton is a goof ball but quite the self-proomoter. Hell Obama didn't write the stimulus bill anyway. If anyone, the cartoonist would be implying that Pelosi and Reid are monkeys. Cheers!!

I love the Charity Navigator. And the light camera does increase revenue while keeping administrative costs low.

Doomed, we often see the tail wagging the dog here, don't we?

Hubman, you've clearly NEVER driven on Cicero Avenue during rush hour. There are no left turn signals and it is quite common to sit in a left turn lane with NO opportunity to turn left before the light turns red - none. It's not a matter of enforcing the law, it's a matter of the city taking advantage of poor infrastructure.

Matt-Man, many in this country don't get satire (as you well know) and they certainly don't understand how government works. Oops! I guess I'm talking bad about Sharpton, aren't I?

Hubman said...

Admittedly, getting ticketed b/c you were already in an intersection awaiting your chance to turn left when the light turned red is a downside.

My dad was telling me about that (he'd go through 4 intersections with cameras on his way to and from work at Kennedy airport every day) and the solution the city came up with. Now if I could only remember...

I believe in the First and Second Amendments, and the way this country is going, well, I hope they survive- like they have for 230 years..

Detroit has the same grip on Michigan as Chi-town has on you..

Red light cameras are all the rage all across the country. They're being install in small towns and big cities. It's the latest revenue generating scheme dressed up as "public safety" bullshit.

In many cities they aren't fixed cameras though. Some of them can be rotated around so that the person monitoring the camera can look into the cars or even into businesses and homes.

They should be outlawed.

And I will not allow 7.5% of my charitable donation to go to pay the salary of the person who runs an organization that I don't support. ;-)

Good Morning Dana,

In the DC metro area, they have those cameras all over, red light and speed cameras. They are a source of revenue. The officials tout public safety. Studies by AAA have shown that they really do little to increase the level of safety.

Regarding your favorite pain in....err civil rights activist, of course he just has to be outraged. People get mighty upset when their livelihood is threatened. The fact that President Obama is black pretty much gives short shrift to the concept of America as an inherently racist nation, so of course, poor ol’ Al is going to be turning over rocks to prove that it is. Why, if America isn’t racist then there is no longer a need for a civil rights movement, and if there is no longer a need for a civil rights movement, then Al ‘n co. are out of a job!

the camera thing is gonna happen...it's already started here...the big issue is ticketing the car owner rather than the driver.

the light countdown thing already happens other places...like Mexico...the light flashes for several seconds before the yellow.

As for the chimp cartoon. When people clamor "RACISM" over something like this cartoon is like the boy crying wolf. Most people roll their eyes and quit listening. Then when real prejudice and discrimination occurs we are numb and tune it out.

Jay said...

I almost forgot to comment on the cartoon. Uh, I don't really care. haha

On the left you have Al Sharpton and Michael Moore. On the right you have Ann Coulter and Sean Hannity. They're all basically the same person. They each have their very own fake outrage machine sitting ready to go off at any moment over any issue real or imagined.

The meaning of the cartoon wasn't hard to figure out. It wasn't particularly funny, but political cartoons aren't always supposed to be funny. Sometimes they're just supposed to project an idea or a belief or whatever.

And political cartoonists are the "shock jocks" of the illustrator world. They're always looking to make people react. In that sense this cartoon was pretty successful.

Sharpton is an opportunist slime-ball. They only what he justifies his existance is by getting him self shameless press. He is one the most devisive human beings in the area of race relations.

And by the way, how many people actually think Obama wrote the Stimulus Bill? Because if you do, clearly your problems are beyond race-relations and you should study some 4th grade American History. The dead chimp is a closer reflection of Nancy Pelosi.

GOOD FOR CAM!!!!! and yup that IS a teenager...

As others have said the red light cams are all over here also...countdown signal? Alderman, get your head out of your butt, because as Dana just said that is what the YELLOW light is for...

See I thought the cartoon represented all the idjit elected officials who put the bill together and then did not bother to read it before voting!

Vixen said...

That's awesome about Cam :)

The count down to red....*shaking head* Um yeah....I'm pretty I thought that was what yellow lights were for too. Huh.

Lu' said...

Good for you Cam. That's a nice boy as he rolls eyes and shrugs shoulders :)

M said...

They have implemented those light cameras at various intersections around the city. They have removed half of them because people were able to get out of the tickets by claiming they weren't the driver of the car when it was photographed.

I do agree with you though - the yellow is your countdown!

Good for Cam!

On the light thing, a friend of mine, who drives like a bat out of hell I might add, was recently ticketed in NY for that and it was a camera that caught her. Dumb ass. Don't run red lights. And yeah, yellow is your warning. lol

Moosekahl said...

Cam is amazing! Wii bowling and tennis are one of the biggest ranges at nursing homes.

And yeah, isn't Chicago wonderful :) I might be coming back for an arthroscopy course some time. I'll let you know if I'm in the neighborhood.

Dana said...

ASM, Charity Navigator is a great resource!

Hubman, what's even more "wrong" with it is ticketing the car rather than the driver. If husband was driving the car registered in my name and ran a red light, the moving violation would go on my record.

Buff, I'm starting to question where we'll be 4 years from now. I've seen nothing but government, government, government in the last 30 days.

Dana said...

Jay, we have the more flexible cameras in "high crime" areas in the city - camera's that can rotate and are connected to 9-1-1.

... and, my local United Way's administrative costs are 4.8%. The Presidents salary is $159,000/year, just 1.86% of total EXPENSES.

Of course, you can donate to whomever you want, but the United Way isn't a "bad" charity - just sayin'

Karl, I've always believed red light cameras were far more about revenue generating than they were about public safety.

Aonghus, I've often said that if a black man can be elected president, the excuses need to end!

Dana said...

Kat, I am well aware that real racism - real prejudice - does exist, but yes, this stupid shit makes me want to ignore everything.

Karen, of course Obama wrote it, and he will get full credit if it succeeds. Now if it fails, Pelosi and Reid will be the writers and will likely lose their jobs.

Bond, you would be a logical thinking man, not an opportunist.

Dana said...

Vixen, Cam seems to have found a comfort with helping/serving others. I think much of it has to do with the positive reinforcement he receives.

Lu, have you been peeking in my house??

Emmy, moving violations issued to a car make no sense to me!

Dana said...

FF, I just wish people would act as if they were being watched without the threat of cameras.

Moose, I've heard the Wii is starting to be used in PT departments for those with limited mobility!

Brian Gardes said...

I went flying through an orange light (somewhere between red and yellow) a couple of weeks ago and damn near crashed as all the camera flashes went off. Luckily I think I was too far through the intersection for them to get a real pic of my car. But damn, those lights are bright!

Regarding..

The 'stimulus' bill - Haven't you listened to all the talking heads from both sides...if it fails it will be the fault of the Republicans, not Reid and Pelosi.

Cartoon - I didn't even get it when I say it. I thought it had to do with that nut in Connecticut and her chimp.

Cam - Congrats on him getting involved in something like that.

Actually, I lost respect for United Way when UW forced my company to use union workers to install new carpet which cost TWICE AS MUCH as the next lower non-union bidder...why? My company was, and still is, receiving grants from UW and UW threatened to not give the usual grant. Totally fail to see the relevance of spending $5k for carpet instead of $2k to get the grant.
