Sunday Secret

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Of all of the things my son could do in his life that would make me proud, there is one thing that will generate far more pride than anything. Making the honor roll? Graduating from college? Choosing a life mate that makes him happy? No, none of these. The one thing he could do that will generate an abundance of pride is to serve in the military, and I have encouraged him to do so from an early age.

I hope your son stongly considers military service. There are many ways to serve your community or the Nation. As you know, the miitary is not an easy life; but rich and rewarding in its own way. This weekend though, the point is driven home that much can be taken from those who have given.Thank you for your service by the way. Hoo-ah!

God bless you for thinkimg of your son and all that makes America a great nation. The Military can give anyone much needed character and discipline. It has taken me decades to develop in myself, what the military could have given me in one year. The exposure to life and other people and what you learn is priceless. The miltary even pays you while you learn. I get to meet a lot of young people serving their country. I can see that they are years ahead of their classmates in becoming great Americans. Their maturity is strong and they are the best that they can be. I am a very greatful and humble citizen when it comes to the wonderful people who serve our nation.

No reason why this one should be a secret! From what I hear, military service is an honorable profession ;-)

And what a perfect weekend to share this 'secret'!

I think that it is a great ambition to have! I know I am proud of all of my family members who serve(d)

That's nice. I want my son to become a gynecologist...However, I make no secret about that. Cheers!!

My oldest wants to play football for Westpoint and the baby wants to be a soldier and fight for his country. Their words, not mine. I encourage them to go military and to have a deep love for our country. I too hope they serve like their uncles did. I would have if not for my heart. Thank you for your service.

Oh and they're 7 & 8. They've been talking like this for about 4 years now.

As long as he doesn't get shot at half your age, and you have to bury your child...

While military service was not in favor when I was in high school, I have certainly encouraged many of my former students to enlist. And looking back to my grad school days, there was a brief window of time/opportunity when I considered it too, and I often wonder what things would have been like if I had.

Well, I don't see why this should be on the secret list. You must be starting to run out.

I can understand why it might qualify as a secret. Our country is at a rather low point in history with regards to military support. It's not exactly popular.

Buffalodick, my heart is with you if you, or someone you love, has experience this. If you're just being pessimistic, let me remind you that there are many jobs that are dangerous. Shall we discourage our children from becoming police officers? Firefighters? Pilots? Fishermen? I could go on, but you get the idea. Where would we be without the people brave enough to take on these jobs?

Good for you! My husband is a former Air Force member and my dad was in the Army. I think it's a very admirable career choice. I don't know what my son will do. He has terrible vision due to his prematurity, but it may not impede him serving if he would like... I'm not sure.

An excellent career choice!
Honorable indeed.

I feel the same way! Enjoy the rest of your holiday, Dana!

Kannon7, I hope he does too! I've heard many an argument that there are other ways to serve one's country that don't require random killing. Personally? I'm glad there are those people out there who willing to give their lives for this country.

we're doomed, the military opens many more doors that college - offers insight that is available no where else - and is an admirable, selfless occupation. Nothing would make me more proud!

hubmanshangout, it's a secret only because the military has become a less than supported choice.

Another Suburban Mom, I am proud of all of my family members who have served and for the millions of others who I never knew but feel a strong bond with!

Matt-Man, why yes! Of course! Protecting the lady bits of the world is certainly most admirable and pride evoking!

Jendeaux, I believe that a deep love of country is missing in many these days. Much easier to expect to be taken care of than it is to be willing to give your life to insure others maintain the freedoms they enjoy!

Dana said...

Buff, of course I hope I never have to bury my only child, but if I had to do that, I'd be proud that it was a death in service of his country!

Os, it really is a wonderful opportunity and unique way to give back to a country that gives so much to us.

Knight, it's on the secret list due to responses like Buff's. Many people believe I am foolish is supporting the clearly brainwashed and unworthy military.

Dana said...

Biscuit, you hit the secrecy point head on. I'd say the support for entering the military these days is somewhat close to that of becoming a Catholic Alter Boy.

ETW, at this point, he's been filled with false notions about what the military is. I continue to give him facts in hopes that it will help him make a good decision regarding military service.

Sage, yes, it's quite honorable indeed!

buffalodick said...

I believe in the First and Second Amendment- no other country I know of supports both. I knew you would defend your point of view, I just wanted you to see the other side of the coin. I'd rather die myself, than have either of my children die for me.

When I was a teen, I didn't know a single person who enlisted. It was something my dad and uncles had done, but it seemed no one from my generation even considered it.

I honestly didn't even know it was an option. (I know that sounds insane, but there was no option other than college). I am glad you are encouraging Cam or at least presenting it as an option.

katherine. said...

I think if he chooses that path in his life it would be honorable. We have family and a few friends serving active duty.

does he have a branch in mind? There are many programs he could become part of which would benefit him if he did decide to enlist...
