Sunday Secret

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

I never used the "green" shopping bags sold by my discount grocery store because I was afraid they would try to charge me for them more than once, or worse yet, accuse me stealing them when I brought them to the checkout counter. Finally, I went to a "high end" grocery store and just bought their "green" shopping bags to use at the discount store to avoid confusion.

Now I don't use my "green" shopping bags because I feel like a snob when I bring them into my discount grocery store.

I've got a couple but never remember to bring them.

I use them for trick or treat bags and for booze transport.

Dammed if you do, and dammed if you don't Dana.

I used to worry about that too but now I use bags from Wegmans (which they don't have around here). Though one confused cashier did once flip it all around looking for the scan tag...

Okay, this made me giggle. I'm paranoid like that, too. I'm afraid they would tell me I stole them or some crap, and besides, do you have any idea how many I would need?? Well, if I had a whole grocery cart full of food, how many WOULD I need?

I would get some of those, but I would forget them. I have considered just taking an old tote bag that my mother probably has lying around using it when I go to Wal-Mart for just a couple of items though. Or do they only allow their tote bags?

They are great for toting around library books too!

We use those types of bags all the time, but most of our ones don`t have any logo`s on them and if they did, i couldn`t careless if i was in a store and it wasn`t there logo on my bag lol

Hammer, mine are in the trunk of my car so that I can't forget them, but I *want* to!

Doomed, life is like a "green" shopping bag, isn't it?

NYDiva, so I'm not the only one?!

Bina, I have 10, and used to take them all in with me, usually using8 or 9 (they actually hold more than regular bags).

Jay, I think you can use anyone's, although I wonder how they'd work at ... say ... WalMart where they have that carousel bagging thing.

Mike, I didn't say my thinking was rational - we know that isn't the case!

I personally haven't gone the green route yet and bought the local shopping stores grocery bags. I still just have them use the plastic bags. I would probably fly off the handle if I got accused of stealing by a store clerk, especially with as much money as I spend in their grocery stores.

One thing you could do with your already purchased bags before you use them next is put some stickers on them so they look used or something, and then maybe the store clerk will think twice before questioning whether or not they are new.

We have so many of them, and we never use them.. I understand you tho.. should we keep a lil bag inside of them with the receipt??

I am so confused by it!!

I have a few Trader Joe's bags in varying sizes, but don't use them when I go to other stores.

Your secret is great.

I use the bags for everything but groceries some days. I think that with the exception of Whole Foods, the grocery baggers hate when you BYO!

Most major supermarkets in the UK don't leave out plastic carrier bags for customers. You have to ask. And sometimes they charge.

It's all to make people get the more robust, re-usable bags. (Fact is, using the more robust bags makes life a lot easier - can carry more with less chance of splitting them.)

Is this better for the environment? Maybe. A bit. Is this better for supermarket's profit margins? Oh yes!

Ack. That sounds like something I would do.

Food Lion calls me the Crazy Bag Lady (well, not to my face, but I'm sure they call me something like that). My solution is to scrawl my surname on the bottom of the bags (yes, I have about half a dozen). They are mostly used to me by now, especially after I complained to the manager. The bags are so heavily used, they LOOK worn and can't possibly be mistaken for something I tried to shoplift.

I really love cloth bags. Not only are they good for the environment, but they are roomy like paper bags (remember THOSE?) and strong! I encourage the baggers to cram them. A gallon of milk, 2 big boxes of Rice Krispies, 6 containers of yogurt, 4 cans of soup, 2-3 frozen dinners and lots more will fit in ONE bag. Try that with flimsy, shapeless plastic crap. I love 'em and hope to see them catch on.
