Friday Wrap-Up

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

The Sears Tower in downtown Chicago, the tallest building in the world from its completion in 1973 until 1996, when it was "dwarfed" by the Petronas Towers in Malaysia (but still the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere.), is being renamed the Willis tower. The London-based insurance broker, Willis Group Holdings Ltd., announced it is moving in and that it has purchased the naming rights that Sears, Roebuck & Co. lost in 2003.

I've got news for Willis ... just like the Baltimore Indianapolis Colts, the California Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and the Washington Bullets Wizards, it will always be the Sears Tower!

~*~*~*~*~

As I was browsing through my vendor list at work yesterday, I saw some addresses keyed in as P.O. BOX, and some keyed in as PO BOX. Does my urgent and overwhelming requirement to make them all the same indicate I am anal retentive, or obsessive compulsive?

~*~*~*~*~

I burned my blog feed to FeedBurner this week and am still trying to decide if this was a good thing, a bad thing or just a thing. Although it might make it easier to read for some of you who use mobile devices (Are there even any of you who do?) it takes FOREVER to show up in my Google Reader. OK, not really FOREVER, but 1-2 hours after the publish time instead of the instantaneous appearance prior to FeedBurner. Does anyone who doesn't blog for money or fame actually burn their feed? Am I even using the proper terminology to describe what I think I did or am I just looking like an idiot here?

~*~*~*~*~

I've not given up my annoying commentor ways entirely. I happened upon someone using really, REALLY bad blogging manners this week and I left a snarky gentle comment pointing out the error of their ways (misrepresentation of a blogger I am extremely fond of, and "loyal" to as well). The offending blogger immediately deleted my comment and played the "I didn't know" game when it was clear they really did know. I did my best to intimidate educate them on proper blogging etiquette ... via email the second time.

Then I got down from my soapbox and reminded myself that not everyone has good manners and I am not the blogging police. Damn it all anyway!! I'd do it again under the same circumstances though *snicker*

~*~*~*~*~

It's the second Saturday of the month tomorrow which means Cam and I will be giving back to the community for the day. Cam wants to help sort frozen meat at the Food Bank Distribution Center again (what is it with boys and wanting to handle their meat?), but I'm considering some other options. There are opportunities at the local suicide prevention center (a cause near and dear to my heart) as well as the local homeless shelter (another passion of mine). I'm trying to decide if it is best to spend the time with Cam, or allow him to go do his thing while I do mine. What do you think? When I asked Cam I got that 13-year old shrug that either says, "I want you to spend the time with me but I don't want to tell you that," or "You've actually done this with me before?"

It is still good to spend time with Cam. That's what family is all about. The apron string will be cut before you know it. Enjoy these times with Cam. He will be grown up before you know it. You are the only loving parent he has. Give him the love and time he deserves. Remember you are doing the work of two people. Keep up the good work, Dana.

Are you SURE you're not the Blog Police? Cuz you have that uniform and badge. ;)

Spend the time with Cam. And do all of the different opportunities. Keep it interesting and he might just find something that he loves.

Am I seeing things or did you mention my beloved Indianapolis Colts in your post. This can only mean one thing! Dana is starting to get ready for another season of Fantasy Football. Sweet!!!

You are absolutely right about; the less I THINK I have to say, the more I REALLY say. For me, there is just something about saying I have nothing to talk about that makes me try harder. HA! And, besides, I'm having a tough time with the whole situation. Wow, I have feelings...go figure!

The people who have already said that you should spend the volunteer time with Cam are really nice and everything but, to be honest, if he is like most 13-year-olds hanging with his Mom has probably already ceased to be a priority. I remember being 13, and it was all about my friends. Any time spent with my parents was because they made me; I loved them but, at 13, it was all about the friends. So, basically, if YOU want to spend time with HIM, then you will have to go handle meat, too. If you decide to do something else, he won't be heartbroken. He loves you, but he's 13...ya know?

And, as for the "Willis" Tower? Nope. Sears Tower, always. Same thing with Dayton's here. They could call it Marshall Field, they are now calling it Macy's. To me, it will always be Dayton's.

Anal retentive or OCD? ummm I'm not sure, but given my complete understanding of this particular situation I can only say it's pointless trying to control it.
Accept it.
Revel in it.
Be one with your affliction...
bahahaha!!!

You are SUCH a rebel! But that's why we loves ya!

Heard about the Sears Tower thing on the radio yesterday. I love how corporations are so self-absorbed to think that they have to have naming rights. My real peeve is that the bowl games that have gone corporate. I miss the old days of just having the Rose Bowl, the Orange Bowl, the Sugar Bowl and the Cotton Bowl. We didn't need anything more!

BTW--it's P.O. Box. Not BOX. That's from someone even more OCD than you!

Once three drunken salesmen from Grand Rapids MI tried to get to the observation deck after it had closed for the day..It kept spitting us out at the 95th floor- the restaurant. I said "Let's take the steps" We tried, and set off the fire alarms.... We were asked to leave...

OCD, but that's ok.. I am too!

Who cares if it's the Willis Tower or Sears Tower? Freedom of Speech tells me that I can call the damn thing whatever I want to, and I'll be correct!

Blog police? They're needed every so often. Yet they tend to be a bit under-appreciated. I have been accosted by them a couple of times now since writing and commenting on blogs.. Mainly because some of my humor doesn't sit well with others.

My advice on Cam? If he's still good with you hanging around, take the opportunity to spend it with him. He'll be vocal soon enough about not wanting to spend as much time being seen with the parents, so take advantage of the time you still get to spend. You can always go back to your own pet projects when that time comes, because there will always be someone out there in need..

Great post Dana.

I use feedburner though I'm not sure why or what it does or means - isn't that dumb? But, I'd have to fix that PO v P.O. business. And! I have some other news for you Dana...they ARE the INDIANAPOLIS COLTS :)

Will always be "The Garden" in Boston, no matter who has their name on it...

Sorry, OS..you may be OCD, but I am an expert in postal things and it is PO BOX - ALL CAPS, NO PERIODS...

You burned your bra? Women are doing that again? OH burned your BLOG...nevermind

People who are rude need to have education offered to them..if they refuse to learn, then let them sink

Honestly, I think this is something for you and Cam to do together. I wonder if the sorting of meat is easier for a 13-year old to do than having to face some of the people he is helping, which may be why he wants to go back there...BUT...I am not sure I would force the issue of you two having to be together. Maybe work out a compromise. One month you select something together, the next you each get to choose what you would like to do. Again, for a 13-year old, the suicide prevention center might be awful intimidating.

Doomed, I'm leaning towards spending the time with him doing what he wants. I really think his shrug was an indicator that he likes to know I'm there, just doesn't want me to know he likes it.

RLL, You like it when I wear the uniform and flash the badge, don't you??

Corky, BALTIMORE Colts, dang it! And I will participate in your fantasy ... ummm ... errr ... fantasy football any day!

Dana said...

Kim, I still haven't decided what I'll do tomorrow. We'll see where he is in the morning. At 13, things change quicker than a traffic light!

Hope, I think the worse part of the affliction is that no one else even cares. How could they not care that the data isn't consistent?? What is wrond with them?? *giggle*

Os, Rebel? Or pain in the ass? No matter, I-yam-what-I-yam! No where is the spinach?

Maybe I'm the idot, but I have no idea what you are even talking about when you say "FeedBurner". Sounds like someone who cooks horse feed before they hand it out.

You say these things about annoying and I don't know what you are talking about!

Must mean I really love you a lot and I'm willing to look past any faults you may think you have! LOL

Have fuh with Cam!

I'm guilty of standing up for fellow bloggers/giving my 2cents when it might not necc be wanted in comments as well. Sometimes I just can't help it! LOL

I can see how you would be on the fence in regards to Cam. Good luck with your decision and let us know what you decide.

I live in Colorado and our football stadium is MILE HIGH STADIUM. Numerous years back it was revamped and the naming rights were bought despite the entire state showing their very obvious disdain of this. Invesco Field my ass. Even when you look it up it comes up as MILE HIGH. LOLOLOL ;)

I hate the corporate naming rights thing. Especially for sports arenas and stadiums. It used to be that they named stadiums (stadia?) and arenas after famous people who were from a certain place, or something that the city identified with. It gave them character and gave the team and city an identity. Now, with all the boring, bland corporate names that's all gone.

It's even worse when colleges do this. They should be naming these things after famous graduates or professors or whatever to put a face on the college. But, they don't bother all that much anymore. Oh well.

Having used stamps.com since about 2001, I've long since become accustomed to the US Postal Service's rather OCD ways. Simple rules: When in doubt, go all caps and avoid punctuation.

Therefore, PO BOX is perfectly fine, as far as they're concerned. Don't bother with periods between the P and the O. You'll save yourself time and make their primitive little computers happy.

Oh, and the 9-digit zip (oh, sorry -- ZIP*) code will get your mail delivered faster with less margin for error.

I have used Feedburner for both RSS feeds and e-mail subscriptions. E-mail usually comes out within a day. RSS reading (e.g. My Yahoo) sometimes seems to get "stuck", and can take a week or more to show. Or the same day! Quien sabe?

I don't even know what Burning a Feed means. LOL.

This is the 4th blog that has mentioned the Sears tower. Must be big news in your parts.

I missed the HNT picture yesterday, but I must say it is one of my favorites ever!

Buff, GREAT story - thank you for sharing it!

Jorm, I ended up spending the time with Cam, fondling meat. It was all good!

Lee, Oh, I fixed the addresses! The Indianapolis Colts? Surely you jest.

Dana said...

DB, but at least that doesn't have anything to do with a corporate sponsor!

Bond, they we all changed to PO BOX!

Bina, Bwahahahaha @ FeedBurner!

Dana said...

Vixen, I was just amazed by this blogger's blatant disregard for doing things "right" It was clear there was a bit of ego there.

Jay, I do too - seems corporations would fare far better using those monies to ... well ... maybe hire employees?

Volly, I was always told punctuation hogs up unnecessary space.

Acuity, thank you! At least I know it's "normal"

Karen, well, you know, the east coast really isn't the only newsworthy part of the country! *wink*
