Is There a Doctor in the House?

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

There are many amazing and insightful American Philosophers - Erich Fromm, Abraham Maslow, and Henry David Thoreau. Although I have a great appreciation for all of these men, my favorite American Philosopher wrote in anapestic tetrameter, and I began reading him at a very early age.

Today is Theodor Seuss (Dr. Seuss) Geisel's birthday. A philosopher whose prose made my tongue dance when I read it out loud and my mind drift to places that could only be imagined.

If I had to pick a favorite quote, it would likely be:

You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose. You're on your own. And you know what you know. You are the guy who'll decide where to go.
-- Dr. Seuss

His "lessons" are just as appropriate for a 5 year old as they are for a 45 year old! Do you have a favorite Dr. Seuss quote?

I still *love* Dr. Seuss. When I was a little kid, our family doctor always kept Dr. Seuss books in the waiting rooms and after my first one there at 4, I was hooked and always asking my mom for books by him. I still pick them up and read them from time to time.

I agree... his lessons are appropriate for all ages. =D I love the quote you put.

Two I love:

"Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind."

"I like nonsense, it wakes up the brain cells. Fantasy is a necessary ingredient in living, It's a way of looking at life through the wrong end of a telescope. Which is what I do, And that enables you to laugh at life's realities."

Have a great day!

Let's not forget Eric Hoffer. A working class, blue collar dude. Dana, I agree, it's hard to beat Dr. Seuss. Dr. Seuss said it so well!

No favourite quote as such but I have a real soft spot for Horton Hatches The Egg, a tale of determination, resolution, persistence in the face of discouragement and elephants. What more could a book need? :)

Amorous, those are two of my favorites too!

Doomed, never would I forget Eric Hoffer, I just didn't want to go crazy with my examples!

Ro, it's interesting - Dr. Seuss always said he didn't start his stories with morals because kids could see morals coming, yet each of his stories does have one!

Bina, "I do not like them Sam I Am!" *gigglesnort*

M, your second one is another favorite of mine!

Jay, yes he was, and hopefully will continue to be!

I love Dr Seuss. I don't care how many times I read his books! It is the one author I am happy to read and reread to my kids.

I don't have a favorite quote, but I like you are honoring him. Thanks for pointing this out.

Bonus for me: My parents didn't "get" Dr. Seuss, so I had to wait until Wally was in my life, and then had the pleasure of experiencing his books with an adult mind! Yay!

I think Seuss, e.e. cummings and Robert Fulghum are spiritual frat brothers.

Has always been my favorite kids author. Such an imagination and positive thoughts. Lately my favorite quote has been "Don't hop on Pop" when the girls do the flying leap into my lap.
