Thursday Thirteen

~*~*~

I needed a little inspiration this morning and remembered a little weekly meme called The Thursday Thirteen. It challenges you to blog a list of thirteen things - any thirteen things - on Thursday.

Cam and I have officially been in the new digs for a month now and I thought it might be fun to come up with a list of thirteen things I've learned since we moved into the apartment:

1. Dishwashers are not mandatory - doing dishes by hand is actually relaxing.

2. The laundromat is very quiet at 8AM on Sundays.

3. No one should be allowed to have 2 dogs and 5 cats in a 2-bedroom apartment.

4. The shrieking voice of the owner of the 2 dogs and 5 cats, yelling at the dogs to stop barking, is far more annoying than than the dogs barking.

5. Although parking spots are not assigned, there are expectations.

6. Neighbors who live upstairs have little concern for the noise they make when tromping down the metal staircase.

7. A dining room table is optional, and usually does little more than serve as a flat surface on which one piles stuff.

8. The world does not come to an end if you eat dinner in the living room.

9. A water heater small enough to fit under a kitchen counter contains enough hot water for a 14 minute, 27 second shower ... and no more.

10. Homework becomes less of a battle when you have control over the power cord for the Xbox.

11. It is possible to make bedsheets and thumbtacks look like stylish window coverings.

12. You can't bake too many batches of brownies.

13. It feels good to know the place you call home really is your home.

A perfect list. I prefer doing dishes by hand, too.

My parents would say that dishwashers are absolutely mandatory--they're called kids.

Sometimes getting back to the "simpler" things makes one realize how really unimportant all those conveniences are.

(Growing up, we also had no *real* dishwasher, no washing machine/dryer, and we had to stop the water while applying shampoo, soap and conditioner in the shower so the hot didn't run out in the less-than-five minutes we had.)

#4....so true.

#12...my big ol' booty says you can! lol

Great list! So glad you're enjoying your new HOME!

I moved into a condo last July...and I worry about my dog barking!

I eat at my computer, which is next to the couch where the Man sits and eats. We have a very small table, and the boys eat at it. And that's ok. :)

I'm so glad you have a place that you can call home. That is so important.

peace...

Ha. Nice. I have never been a fan of dining room tables. I sit on the couch and Schmoop lays on the floor when we eat. And you are right on the mark...

Doing dishes by hand IS relaxing. I dig it. Cheers Dana!!

#1--I have to do my dishes by hand before using the dishwasher anyway...

#7--I haven't had a dining room table in decades.

#8--My world would have ended similar decades ago if this were the case!

I don't mind washing dishes, but I prefer the dishwasher just because of the super hot heat it can produce insuring that my dishes are totally sterile.

I don't use a dining room table either. I use my Tablemate. That thing is awesome.

Mmmmm brownies.

Ah! The power cord! Brilliant!

My dishwasher broke about 3 years ago and rather than repair it, I decided to wait to replace when I got the kitchen remodeled. So I am still waiting on that remodel...And doing dishes by hand. It is not really a big deal. I agree.

I live upstairs in an apartment and I'm very aware of my steps moving about the apartment and coming down the stairs. I try to keep it to a minimum, but sometimes it's just going to sound like I'm stomping.

For all you downstairs folks...I'm sorry =/

13messages, there's something about the tactile nature of washing dishes that really makes me smile!

Ms. Inconspicuous, it has been nothing less than wonderful to let go of that 3200 sq ft house and enjoy the simplicity of our 1000 sq ft apartment.

Real Live Lesbian, Cam will argue with you on the brownie issue. Seems I'm baking another batch every other day!

Janet, if you have a voice like my neighbor, just remember the dog barking is far less offensive :)

Margaret, Cam and I eat in the same room and talk about his day. I'm thinking the sofa is just as good a place to do that as the dining room table is!

Matt-Man, we had "rules" Kids could not eat in the living room - they had to sit at the table. I usually sat at the table with the kids as I enjoyed their company more than that of the living room inhabitant!

Osbasso, aren't you glad you weren't oppressed by the dining room table rule?!

Jay, tablemate? Is that like a TV tray?

Alice Audrey, no arguing - I hand it over when the completed work is shown to me!

Karen, I like the wash the slippery dishes feel when I'm washing them. SHHH! I know I'm weird!

soonerscotty, in defense of my upstairs neighbors, the stairs leading to the ground floor are RIGHT outside my front window ... and they are made of steel. It sounds like the metal bleachers at a high school football field every time someone walks down them - not entirely their fault!

...or 2 dogs in a one bedroom apartment on the top floor, even though the complex rules say dogs on the 1st floor only. Especially when those dogs chase each other all the time.

Though I fear I'm #4 when my cats are being especially unruly. :)

My hubby enjoys washing the dishes - he listens to tunes, watches the birds out the window and finds it relaxing. Thank god someone does!

Our dining room table is our cat's favorite spot to sprawl. Good thing we always eat in the family room on the couch!

Congrats on your new space.

Dana, I hate that I have missed reading your blog for the last month and a 1/2. I've just got caught up on every thing.

I'm torn, because I want to tell you how sorry I am that you have to go through all this. I can't imagine how very hard it must be for you.

But then I want to tell you how very proud I am of you! You are just so strong and so brave. I realize you may not think of yourself that way much of the time, but I admire you so very much for doing what you believe in.

Hang in there girl. I only wish I were there to help you. Helping people is one thing I really do love to do!

We don't have a dishwasher anymore either. I find that if I get them done right after a mean, they are very relaxing. However, if they sit or pile up for any amount of time, it's stressful to wash them. As for dining room tables, the girls eat at the table, Moo eats wherever he feels like it (but NOT the bedroom... that's on my extreme NO! list), and Gnymph and I eat in the living room usually. ^_^

I've found that I'm much happier in smaller living spaces. Dunno why, but it's true.

I remember T 13! I used to play every week on my other blog! :) Ah....the memories. I have a TON of T13 banners if you are interested in them, most of them are custom made.

Sheets can absolutely be fabulous window coverings. They've worked for 9 years in my house ;)

Missed this post yesterday, guess I came by before 10am when you posted..

Having lived in apartments for much of my life - don't ask - I can relate to many of these...though I would still choose a downstairs apartment any day

In response to the dishwasher one, I am finding out that sometimes (more likely than not) handwashing the dishes is working out better than tossing the dishes in the dishwasher.

ps. this is rage.

RE: curtains? Mighty mend it. That stuff is awesome. So far I have fixed my leather brief case, daughter's leather purse, done and emergency hem repair and fixed a $45 bra from Victoria's Secret. Bet you can make some great curtains with this stuff.
